STEPS TO GET ACCREDITATION OF COLLEGE IN INDIA

Accreditation of an organization is the process of getting certified and authorized for the standards of operations and infrastructural facilities provided by it. Being accredited means, an institution has been evaluated and that it has met the set standards of quality determined by the accrediting organization. A college has to adhere to the set criteria of the concerned authorities, to sustain its accreditation. Colleges in India are accredited by various authorities, which provide independent review of educational programmes to determine that the education provided is of uniform and good quality. India has two autonomous accreditation bodies- National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) working under University Grants Commission (UGC) National Board of Accreditation (NBA) functioning under All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) In India, only those colleges that have completed 5 years since their establishment can apply for accreditation. The process of accreditation aims towards systematic, objective, data-based, transparent and shared experience for institutional improvement. Hence, to get your college accredited in India, you need to implement the following steps: Step 1 Firstly, you need to fill up the online accreditation form. This would include the Letter of Intent and Institutional Eligibility for Quality Assessment. Ensure that you provide appropriate information and submit the form within the stipulated period of time. Step 2 After filling up the form, you need to submit the requisite accreditation fees. The assessment and accreditation fee structure varies depending upon the courses offered by the college. For instance, the accreditation fee for colleges offering course in only one stream i.e. Arts or Commerce or Science is Rs. 50,000/- and those offering courses in more than one stream, such as Science and Arts is Rs. 75,000/-. Step 3 After the submission of the fee, your college administrative committee should prepare a detailed report to be submitted to the accrediting agency. The report should include the goals, operating measures and facilities provided by the college along with the essential documents. Step 4 Once the accrediting agency receives a detailed report, an assessment team will visit your college for evaluation. Your college would be evaluated on 7 criteria, namely; curricular aspects, teaching-learning evaluation, research-consultancy and extension, infrastructure and learning resources, student support and progression, governance and leadership and innovative practices. Step 5 After assessing the 7 domains, the accreditation agency will provide a final score i.e. Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), according to which a grade A, B, C or D will be given to your college. If your college is awarded grade A, B or C then it is eligible to get accredited. All the steps mentioned above will give you an in-depth knowledge of how to get your college accredited. The accreditation will be provided for 5 years to your college and you will have to apply for its renewal once the validity of accreditation expires. Thus, it becomes imperative to take the visit as a learning experience and take necessary steps to improve the style of working, to ensure that your college attains timely accreditation.

NOC NO LONGER REQUIRED FOR CBSE AFFILIATION!

Setting up a CBSE school just got easier as schools will no longer need an NOC (No Objection Certificate) from the CBSE for applying for affiliation. Amendment to policy Byelaws Last month, an amendment was made to a rule on CBSE affiliation by-laws. According to a CBSE circular, dated July 8, 2013, “A school seeking provisional affiliation with the Board must have formal prior recognition of the State/U.T. government and also produce evidence to this effect that the applicant school had intimated the education department of the State about the application made to CBSE seeking affiliation with the Board.” Only if the CBSE receives an objection to the application does the school need to produce an NOC from the State. “In case the board receives objections during the application process of the school, it may ask the concerned school to produce the NOC from the State government or Union Territory or otherwise it would be assumed that the concerned State/UT government has no objection,” the amendment says. The circular also says the amendment in the affiliation bye-laws was made on the recommendations made by the affiliation committee in a meeting on June 24, and the subsequent approval of the governing body of the Board. As per the earlier rule, the application of the school seeking provisional affiliation with the CBSE must either be forwarded to the Board by the State government or there should be an NOC to the effect. Our Reaction At the outset, it looks like a good move and will really simplify the process of setting up a school and ensure speedy affiliation to the CBSE. This move will not only remove the bureaucratic delays and hurdles but also put an end to the heavy bribes that officials and politicians demand from the schools to grant the NOC. This will also encourage existing state board schools to shift to CBSE since CBSE schools are preferred by parents for the standard of education they offer. This trend will be seen in states like Tamil Nadu where the state boards not only have to follow a traditional schooling curriculum and have also have fee regulation and many administrative constraints under which they have to operate. Reaction from the states Education, under the constitution has always been a state subject and hence, states are not expected to relinquish control over the school system so easily so there may be policy announcements on this subject, which may impose some new controls in the coming months. We would hope nothing of this happens but will have to wait and watch. Even if no policy change is made by the states they can still send objections to the CBSE regarding granting the affiliation, but the tediousness of the process might make the state government selective about this. But it has to be seen how each state government will react to it. However for now, we can say it is a huge step in the right direction and Mr. Shashi Tharoor should be thanked for taking this step – which has been a long standing demand of the school sector! If this news has made you excited to setup a CBSE School- Do fill up the form and we can get you started in the process of opening your dream school in your city.
